These towers, constructed from granite sourced from nearby mountains, served as vital lookout points, allowing us to imagine the countless sentinels who once stood guard over these ancient territories. The sight of the towers, largely intact due to their isolation from modern development, filled us with awe and wonder.

Day 2: Embracing the Silence

On Day 2, our hike was a more manageable six hours but no less rewarding. The tranquility of the Great Wall was almost surreal; with not another soul in sight, we felt as if we owned the Wall. The quietness allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in the moment, where we could hear the wind whispering through the watchtowers and the crunch of gravel underfoot.

As we explored, we found large granite rocks that were once part of the Wall's defensive structure, scattered along our path. Some were mere boulders, whereas others were intricately integrated into the Wall itself, evidence of the incredible craftsmanship that has withstood the test of time. During our journey, we had the unique opportunity to stay at a local farmer's house, which added a personal touch to our experience. Our host, a dedicated guardian of the Great Wall for many years, has been a passionate volunteer working to preserve and protect this incredible heritage along with the antiques found in the surrounding area. He has established a small exhibition hall in his home, displaying fascinating artifacts collected from the Wall, each with its own story to tell. As we settled in for the evening, he regaled us with tales of the Wall’s history and the significant role it has played in Chinese culture, enriching our understanding of this monumental structure. His enthusiasm and knowledge were genuinely inspiring, and we admired his commitment to safeguarding this treasure for future generations. As we expressed our heartfelt gratitude for his hospitality and efforts, we knew that our stay here was more than just a night’s rest; it was a bridge connecting us to the past and the stories of those who lived alongside this magnificent structure.

A new railway line connecting the cities of Lijiang and Shangri-La in Yunnan Province, China has opened, marking a significant development for tourism and economic growth in the region. This railway is part of the larger Yunnan-Tibet Railway and is designed to enhance transportation connectivity in Southwest China.

With a remarkable top speed of 140 kilometers per hour, the railway has drastically reduced travel time between Lijiang and Shangri-La from approximately 4 hours by bus to just 1 hour and 18 minutes. Furthermore, it acts as a vital link between Shangri-La and the provincial capital, Kunming, offering a swift journey of 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Positioned in the transitional zone between the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, this 139-kilometer railway line connects numerous renowned attractions such as Lijiang Ancient Town, Yulong Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Haba Snow Mountain, and the famous Shangri-La. These connections hold great potential for boosting tourism and local economic development along the route.

Major cities, like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou had lift the requirement of showing health codes when taking public transports. Beijing also stopped the pop-up window on health codes for those coming back from other provinces. It’s expected that other cities will follow up soon this week.

The state council released holiday schedule in 2023 yesterday. Searching volume for flights and trains rocketed by 300-900% on major OTAs like Trip.com/Fliggy/Tongcheng. The coming new year holiday will witness a strong rebound in travel.

Unverified sources indicate that China will lift international travel restrictions by the congress meeting in March 2023, or even earlier. Overseas travelers coming into China will be completely free by May day holiday in 2023.
