More than a diplomatic milestone, the visit signals a renewed commitment to openness, cultural exchange, and practical cooperation — with travel firmly at the heart of the relationship.

This was the first visit to China by a British Prime Minister in eight years, a gap Sir Keir himself highlighted at the official welcome. “They say that eight days is a long time in politics — try eight years,” he said, noting the significance of stepping onto Chinese soil after such a long hiatus. Addressing his delegation, he framed the trip as part of a broader shift: an outward-looking Britain, confident on the global stage, focused on building relationships and securing tangible opportunities in the national interest.

One of the most closely watched outcomes of the visit is the anticipated rollout of visa-free entry for UK passport holders travelling to China. Expected to be implemented after the Chinese New Year holiday in early March 2026, the policy would dramatically lower the barrier for British visitors — from leisure travellers and cruise passengers to business delegates and cultural explorers. For the UK travel industry, it marks a potential turning point, unlocking pent-up demand and making China significantly more accessible for first-time and repeat visitors alike.

The tone of the visit extended well beyond conference rooms. In Beijing, Sir Keir and his delegation dined at a local restaurant specialising in Yunnan cuisine — a regional food style celebrated for its diversity and bold flavours. The setting was informal, the welcome warm. Although the restaurant had thoughtfully prepared forks and knives, the entire delegation chose to use Chinese chopsticks. Sir Keir took time to thank the staff personally, expressing his appreciation with a sincere “Xie Xie,” a small but resonant gesture that reflected respect and cultural curiosity.

Cultural exchange continued with the Prime Minister’s visit to the Forbidden City, one of China’s most iconic landmarks and an essential stop for international travellers. Walking through the historic heart of Beijing, Sir Keir underscored the importance of heritage, tourism, and shared cultural experiences as foundations for long-term understanding between nations.

Taken together, these moments point toward a broader revival of people-to-people exchange. With visa-free entry on the horizon, British travellers can look forward to easier journeys to China’s great cities, historic sites, river cruises, and culinary regions — from imperial Beijing to the landscapes of Yunnan and beyond.

Eight years after the last UK prime ministerial visit, the message is clear: a new chapter is opening. And from early March 2026, for UK visitors to China, that chapter may begin without the need for a visa — just curiosity, a passport, and the freedom to explore.

As a team of hiking guides, we embarked on an exhilarating recce trip, spanning three unforgettable days on 4-6 December 2024 on a particularly remote section of this ancient marvel. Little did we know that this journey would not only strengthen our bond as a team but also deepen our appreciation for the rich history and stunning landscapes that accompany this monumental structure.

Day 1: Conquering the Challenges

Early on Day 1, we set out determined and eager to uncover the secrets of the Wall. Our hike was nothing short of challenging, clocking in at a demanding eight hours. The thrill of traversing the undulating terrain was palpable as we navigated steep ascents and descents, each twist revealing yet another extraordinary view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. With each step, we were reminded of the incredible feat the original builders achieved during the Ming Dynasty.

One of the most striking features we encountered were the watchtowers, standing proudly at intervals of about every 200 meters. These towers, constructed from granite sourced from nearby mountains, served as vital lookout points, allowing us to imagine the countless sentinels who once stood guard over these ancient territories. The sight of the towers, largely intact due to their isolation from modern development, filled us with awe and wonder.

Day 2: Embracing the Silence

On Day 2, our hike was a more manageable six hours but no less rewarding. The tranquility of the Great Wall was almost surreal; with not another soul in sight, we felt as if we owned the Wall. The quietness allowed us to immerse ourselves fully in the moment, where we could hear the wind whispering through the watchtowers and the crunch of gravel underfoot.

As we explored, we found large granite rocks that were once part of the Wall's defensive structure, scattered along our path. Some were mere boulders, whereas others were intricately integrated into the Wall itself, evidence of the incredible craftsmanship that has withstood the test of time. This day reinforced our understanding of the Fresh perspectives on what it means to hike along the Great Wall, igniting our passion to share this hidden gem with future clients.

Day 3: A Fitting Conclusion

The final day was a mellow three-hour trek, allowing us to reflect on our journey. As we strolled along the ancient stones, the feeling of camaraderie among our team members was palpable. Sharing stories, laughter, and the challenges we faced brought us closer together and aligned our goals as hiking guides.

Reaching one final watchtower, we took a moment to capture the breathtaking view of the undulating wall snaking its way through the hills. It was a poignant reminder of the history we were traversing and the incredible experience we had just lived.

This recce trip was more than just an exploration; it was a journey of discovery, camaraderie, and respect for the ancient world. As we prepare to share these remarkable sections of the Great Wall with hikers from around the globe, we are filled with excitement and anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead. This is not just a wall; it’s a testament to human ingenuity and resilience, and we are proud to be its storytellers.

During our journey, we had the unique opportunity to stay at a local farmer's house, which added a personal touch to our experience. Our host, a dedicated guardian of the Great Wall for many years, has been a passionate volunteer working to preserve and protect this incredible heritage along with the antiques found in the surrounding area. He has established a small exhibition hall in his home, displaying fascinating artifacts collected from the Wall, each with its own story to tell. As we settled in for the evening, he regaled us with tales of the Wall’s history and the significant role it has played in Chinese culture, enriching our understanding of this monumental structure. His enthusiasm and knowledge were genuinely inspiring, and we admired his commitment to safeguarding this treasure for future generations. As we expressed our heartfelt gratitude for his hospitality and efforts, we knew that our stay here was more than just a night’s rest; it was a bridge connecting us to the past and the stories of those who lived alongside this magnificent structure.

This railway is part of the larger Yunnan-Tibet Railway and is designed to enhance transportation connectivity in Southwest China.

With a remarkable top speed of 140 kilometers per hour, the railway has drastically reduced travel time between Lijiang and Shangri-La from approximately 4 hours by bus to just 1 hour and 18 minutes. Furthermore, it acts as a vital link between Shangri-La and the provincial capital, Kunming, offering a swift journey of 4 hours and 30 minutes.

Positioned in the transitional zone between the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, this 139-kilometer railway line connects numerous renowned attractions such as Lijiang Ancient Town, Yulong Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Haba Snow Mountain, and the famous Shangri-La. These connections hold great potential for boosting tourism and local economic development along the route.

Despite some sections still under construction due to the harsh natural environment and high altitude along the route, the completion of the Yunnan-Tibet Railway will further enhance tourism opportunities, particularly in Shangri-La, a globally renowned destination.

Observers predict that the new Lijiang-Shangri-La railway will contribute to increased winter tourism in Shangri-La, as accessing the region during winter months has proven challenging due to adverse weather conditions. They can now link their Visa and Mastercard accounts to popular mobile payment platforms like Alipay and WeChat Pay. This allows them to book taxis, use the subway, and make purchases at millions of outlets across the country. Alipay and WeChat Pay have made efforts to accept foreign credit cards under the guidance of Chinese regulators, aiming to attract foreign investment and boost the economy. Overseas users can immediately link their cards to these digital wallets, offering greater convenience. China's almost cashless society sees billions of electronic transactions annually, with Alipay and WeChat Pay dominating the market share.
