Battling the Sauna Weather on the Great Wall Tue, 3 Aug 2010 10:15 GMT+8
By Peter Cao, Great Wall Hiking Michelle and Josh from the United States arrived at Beijing International Airport at midday and was transferred immediately to the Great Wall. In the car, they enjoyed the picnic lunch which was a self-heated rice with meat. Josh was very impressed by this military technology. “ It’s delicious ! ” ![]() In two hours we arrived at GUBEIKOU – the starting point of the hiking. It was one of the hottest days of the year—37 degrees centigrade, 90%humidity -- a typical sauna weather in Beijing. When we reached the Wall, we were all soaked already. Luckily, the GREAT WALL HIKING provide them sufficient water. Michelle was amazed by the originality of the Wall and she took photos of everything. After two hours’ hiking, we arrived at the highest watchtower and took a big break refuel led with food and drink. For the next one hour, we had to walk off the wall. We disappeared in dense bushes and through maize fields. The thongs of some bushes caused a lot of trouble to the couple, since they didn’t have long pants. When we arrived at the foot of the Wall again,I noticed that Josh looked very miserable. He explained that he felt exhausted by the sweating caused by humidity. I cheered him up saying that when we arrive in one hour he could enjoy free cold beer. At last we arrived at the restaurant before it got dark. Josh put the beer bottle to his mouth and swallowed greedily. Michelle was evolved in taking photos of two lovely Chinese kids. They were greatly refreshed at the dining table taking delicious farmer’s meal with beer and chatting with another group. We were able to take a shower after meal and climbed in torch light to the Wall again for our outdoor camp— the top floor of a watchtower. They slept soundly in sleeping bags soon. Early next morning,we woke up in fresh and cool air. After a simple western breakfast,we decided to start hiking early before the temperature rose. We hiked for two hours and had to leave the Wall midway, since the next section had been closed by the government since last month. “ We love hiking!” Michelle said. “No tourists here. That’s what we expected.” Josh added. Trip attended: Hiking and Sleeping on the Great Wall
